FOSS Leadership Training

Presented by Rockwood Leadership and Planetwork

We are offering a leadership development program for FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) leaders who want to develop their own leadership abilities and in developing together consider grow our capacity as a community of networks, organizations and institutions work together.

WHY? The FOSS movement has been successful in revolutionizing the way individuals and corporations create, use and distribute software. The success of the FOSS community in creating a "free culture" of collaborative development, fostering the development of open standards stems from its vibrancy, innovation and vision.

This remarkable power and influence has resulted in a proliferation of organizations, networks that require a range of new skills. We now work in foundations, partner with dozens of corporate and non-profit organizations, organize people, supervise teams--in short, we are called upon to be leaders in new and different ways.

To continue growth in the sector, we need to train and support FOSS leaders who not only an expert in technology, but also a range of leadership and collaboration skills required to build a diverse and vibrant community of allied institutions.

This leadership seminar is an opportunity for FOSS leaders to come together to absorb the best in cutting edge leadership skills, and also build community across the range of institutions that are emerging to support our vision.

The Rockwood Leadership Institute has trained more than 2,000 leaders in the non-profit and for-profit sector, concentrating on leadership development for individuals who wish to create and disseminate a powerful vision, build enduring partnerships across differences and align and inspire groups toward common goals.

Vision, collaboration, and communication are the fundamental building blocks of successful Open Source communities, and critical skills for Open Source leaders. And yet, few technical folks get the chance to learn these skills. That's what Art of Leadership is about.

I spend my days with one foot in the environmental movement and the other in Open Source communities. Art of Leadership has helped me focus my passion, develop my vision, and develop a set of practices that have helped me succeed in both worlds. Open Source has been a huge gift to the social change sector. Art of Leadership is one of the gifts that social change activists get to give back.
