Michael Naimark holds a coveted research appointment in arts and media at Interval Research Corporation where he has been since 1992. As an independent media artist, he produced artworks in conjunction with the Paris Metro, the Exploratorium, the ZKM, and the Banff Centre for the Arts and consulted for companies including Atari, Lucasfilm, Apple and Panavision. He was instrumental in making the first interactive laserdiscs at MIT in the late 1970s and was on the original design team for the MIT Media Laboratory. |
He has worked extensively with projection and immersive virtual environments, and his art projects have been exhibited internationally to wide acclaim. In 1998 he was the jury chair for Interactive Art at Ars Electronica. Naimark has held faculty appointments at the San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco State University, California Institute of the Arts, MIT and the University of Michigan. He is on the Editorial Boards of Presence and Leonardo Electronic Almanac and has been a member of the Society for Visual Anthropology since 1984. He created a B.S. in Cybernetic Systems as an independent major from the University of Michigan in 1974 and received an M.S. in Visual Studies and Environmental Art from MIT in 1979. His recent project, "BE NOWHERE (Welcome to the Neighborhood)," is a 3D panoramic installation about public plazas in global danger zones and was supported by Interval Research with the cooperation of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre in Paris. |
