PLANETWORK Readies Multi-Media Dimension of Information Technology and Global Ecology Conference

San Francisco----A high tech group working to accelerate awareness of the global ecological crisis makes final preparations for a conference called PLANETWORK, May 12-14, 2000 in the San Francisco PresidioÕs Golden Gate Club. The conference will focus on how information technology can support global ecology.

PLANETWORK Technical Director, Mike Vincenty, and crew are busy this week investigating the best network architecture in preparation for the installation of the T-1 line by Broadwing, Inc. and LMKI. "WeÕll be providing full-bore internet access for the entire building," said Vincenty from his Ôday-jobÕ as network administrator for the California Institute of Integral Studies. "IÕm sure itÕs more technology than the PresidioÕs Golden Gate Club has ever seen before!"

One room at the PLANETWORK conference will feature public-access computer kiosks running Linux, an open-source operating system, and a Netscape browser. This will allow entrepreneurs to show off their 'web wares' and demo sites to other interested collaborators.

"There may be conference participants who have never used a Linux machine before," said Vincenty. "We encourage anyone who has an ecology-related business idea or is just fed-up with e-business-as-usual to come and play with our technology."

In addition to the scheduled plenary and smaller working sessions, PLANETWORK staff will host workshops on multi-media tools and Internet applications. Television crews from Global Village Beijing and Environmental News Network (ENN) will also be onsite; as well as many local reporters and media professionals.

For those who cannot attend physically, PLANETWORK will provide a live audio and video ÔwebcastÕ that will broadcast selected speakersÕ presentations over the Internet. Additional interviews which are not on the conference schedule will be ÔstreamedÕ live from the PLANETWORK Press Room. The webcast will be hosted at www.planetworkers.net. Audio tapes of all scheduled sessions will also be available after the conference.

PLANETWORK speakers include Jan Hauser (Sun Microsystems), Kevin Kelly (Wired), Julia Butterfly Hill (tree-sitter & green activist), Gloria Brown Simmons (MIT Center for Advanced Visual Studies), Bruce Sterling (sci-fi author), Meredith Lane, (biologist, Academy of Natural Science), Jon Zilber (verde.com), Eduardo Kac (Art Institute of Chicago), Tyler Volk (Professor of Biology, NYU; NASA), Pierre Levy (Hypermedia, University of Paris-VIII), John Helly (Supercomputer Center; UC San Diego), John Radke (UC Berkeley), Adam Werbach (Sierra Club, past president), John Delaney (U of WA; Neptune Project), Char Davies (digital artist), Elisabeth Sahtouris (biologist, futurist), Duane Elgin, Brian Swimme, Ralph Abraham, and David Rothenberg.
